Song: Victims, Princesses and Bears.

Well, alright, it's a lyric so far, but you bet I'll be looking for the tune. I'd heard about the panda business, then I read Elizabeth Moon on the subject, and then I followed her link to the Jezebel article, and then my brain went 'ping' at me, which it does periodically. Ranty ranty rant. Ironically, I did write a sweet little song about a red dress earlier today, just as a break from the political polemics.

VICTIMS, PRINCESSES AND BEARS

Here’s to the women of twenty-eleven

The BBC thinks you’re all great;

It’s published the names of its favourite dozen

And that’s caused a storm of debate

It’s not what she’s done gives a woman her worth

It’s who marries her and what she wears

And that explains why more than half of those listed

Are victims, princesses and bears.

Victims, princesses and travelling pandas –

Oh, ladies, don’t give yourselves airs!

That explains why more than half of those listed

Are victims, princesses and bears!

One woman chosen is head of her country

Another aspires so to be

One is an athlete and one is a singer

They all represent you and me.

But never mind science and never mind literature

Honestly, nobody cares

When the chief among women of twenty-eleven

Are victims, princesses and bears.

Victims, princesses and bears, Sweetie!

Ladies, don’t give yourselves airs!

Here’s to the women of twenty-eleven

The victims, princesses and bears!

Indeed. I have the blog 'Jezebel' to thank for putting those three key words so pithily together, but trying to go to bed without writing this would have been like sharing a bed with a particularly restless porcupine in my head.

oh, jeez, I'm not gonna look, don't wanna spoil my NYE... but JEEZ, Beeb, can't you do better?

I gotcher women of 2011. Egyptian protesters. An octegenarian American grandma (relative of one of my biker people) who got pepper sprayed... turns out she's been doing this stuff for 60 years! One lovely lady I'm sitting here looking at as I type who's endured having her home life pulled from under her not once but several times, and who's making a hell of a go of it on her own... and three lovely English ladies singing dah-dits on the steps of St. Paul's. Among others I can name.

Where is the Beeb's sense of history?! Britain has a justifiably proud tradition of strong women dating back to at least Gytha... *sigh* Maybe they need a Yank to... yank... on their chain a bit.

Nobel prize-winners and writers and scientists, businesswomen and thinkers and makers and doers alike will doubtless continue to do what they do. But what a wasted opportunity to inspire! *Is humbled to be included in your list*. Heh. I shan't forget the trip to St Paul's in a hurry.

Thank you! It was your excellent and thought-provoking blog entry that set me off, and for that and your kind words I thank you very much! Good way to see the year out - writing, that is, even if the inspiration for it is itself a source or rantiness.

Y'know, I'm almost tempted to compile two separate lists of my own: "Favourite female eye-candy of 2011"; "favourite female brainmeats of 2011". Just to see who turns up on both, and who doesn't.

...I said *almost*.

For a start I'd have to add a third list anyway: "Favourite female voices of 2011". 'Cos I know at least one lady who's staying high on that list from previous years, occasionally shows up on the eye-candy one, but is still consistently failing to show up on the brainmeats one, which is frustrating, 'cos I think a tiny extra boost of business and/or lyric-construction smarts would do her career a world of good... =:o{ (Don't worry, it's definitely not you! =:o} )

(Is just surfacing from the New Year post-party-torpor)

Must admit that I don't usually go over these end-of-year lists in the News - automatically filing them under the author 'Phil Space.'

But here them seems to be *real* yawning gap of credibility...the names that could have been mentioned are legion... Just from a semi-hung-over state, the name Angela Merkel comes up first - what ever one might think of the Euro as a project - someone who has been involved at the top to stop a world currency from crashing (as elected head of a key nation) would seem to merit some consideration...?

Thank you very much! Glad to see you here, Gifted!

Some of my writing's political and ranty, on green issues as well as other matters, and some is inspired by literature, history, folklore and anything else that makes my songwriting-head go 'ping'... I hope I'll 'see' you here again!
